Hi Reader,
Here’s the thing about people-pleasers (and I say this with love): you’re not selfish enough.
When you please others first, you’re pouring from an empty cup — and that makes you energetically bankrupt. But unlike money, there’s no Chapter 11 for energy. You can’t restructure your way out of exhaustion. And most of us dismiss it… until it catches up.
What happens next? You’ve given everything away (with the best intentions, of course). Later, when you’re depleted, you start to expect to receive something back. But here’s the catch: people-pleasers are notoriously bad at receiving.
Think about it:
- When someone gifts you something, do you say “Oh, I don’t need it” instead of simply, “Thank you”?
- When someone compliments your shirt, do you brush it off with “Oh, it’s old” instead of receiving the kindness?
- When someone offers help you could use, do you refuse it for a dozen reasons?
Every time you push away a gift, a compliment, or support, you’re telling the world “No thanks, I don’t need it.” And the world listens.
Start small: say “thank you” every time you receive something. No excuses, no brushing it off. Just take it in. You’ll start to notice how abundant the world around you actually is.
Go further: keep a gratitude journal for one week.
✨ Every day, write down 5 things/people/events you’re grateful for.
✨ At least one of them has to be for yourself.
✨ More is welcome, but 5 is the minimum.
💌 Bonus for you: If you reply with your first 5 thank-yous, I’ll personally keep you accountable for the next 7 days. That means I’ll cheer you on, remind you if I don’t see your daily gratitude, and even share bonus techniques for receiving more once you complete the week. You’ll get a glimpse of the kind of support my ongoing clients receive.
And here’s the disclaimer: pleasing yourself first doesn’t make you a bad person. It makes you full. When you’re full, you give without expectation, without strings attached. You’ll still be generous with your time, your energy, your love, your help. But you won’t be secretly waiting for a payback — because you’ll already feel abundant. And funny enough? That’s when more starts flowing in.
So—what are your 5 thank-yous today? Hit reply and tell me.
